Recent W4R Success Stories:

Women Human Rights Defender Nassima Al-Sada was released from prison in Saudi Arabia in June 2021.  Nassima's case was highlighted in last year's W4R!

TEAR-GASSED LGBT STUDENTS CLEARED OF ALL CHARGES

In 2019, Melike, Özgür, and 17 other Turkish students organized a sit-in to protest the school’s ban on their Pride march. That peaceful protest was met with an overwhelming police presence which quickly escalated to the use of tear gas, physical violence, and arrests. The students were charged with “participating in an unlawful assembly”  and faced up to three years in prison.

Amnesty supporters rallied in support of them and sent nearly 500,000 letters demanding they be cleared of all charges — because they were simply standing up for their human rights.

This month, that outcry broke through — Melike, Özgür, and the other 17 people who participated in the protest were acquitted! This is the power of mass advocacy — This is the power of our voice when we speak in unison.
