Refugees:
Sacramento County welcomed more than 20,000 refugees during the last 15 years, largely from Afghanistan, Iraq and the former Soviet Union. Many of them arrived with "SIV (Special Immigration status)" based on their assistance to the US military.
As recently as 2016 more than 3000 refugees resettled here in a single year. In 2017 there were nearly 2000 new refugees but this year the number dropped drastically.
Five refugee resettlement organizations operate in the Sacramento area. They have received support and encouragement from government, community and religious communities. The largest of the organizations is the International Rescue Committee.
